World Faiths – Meditation

Those who believe, and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Aye! it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts can find comfort.

Islam, the Holy Qur’an, 13:29

No people sit in a gathering remembering Allah, But the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tranquillity descends upon them and Allah remembers them before those who are with Him.

Islam, Saying of the Holy Prophet (sa), Sunan Ibn Majah

Wise people are only those who remember Allah standing, sitting and lying on their sides and keep meditating and pondering over the creation of the heavens and the earth, which impels them to supplicate: ‘Lord Thou hast not created all this without purpose; indeed, everything in Thy creation is full of the manifestations of Thy Power and Wisdom, which points to Thy Blessed Being.’

Islam, the Promised Messiah (as), Essence of Islam – Volume II, p. 93

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Judaism, The Tanakh, Proverbs 9.10

This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful.

Christianity, The Bible, Joshua 1:8

Within the lotus of the heart he dwells, where the nerves meet like the spokes of a wheel at its hub. Meditate on him as OM. Easily may you cross the sea of darkness.

Hinduism, Mundaka Upanishad 2.2.6

A thousand and hundred thousand feats of intellect shall not accompany man in the hereafter. How then can one be purified? How can one throw away the falsehood? Says Nanak, by being content with the Command of God, which is pre-written for everyone!

Sikhism, Adi Granth, Japuji 1, M.1, p. 1

Verily, from meditation arises wisdom. Without meditation wisdom wanes.

Buddhism, Dhammapada 282
