World Faiths: Idolatry

Allah will not forgive that anything be associated with Him as partner, but He will forgive what is short of that to whomsoever He pleases. And whoso associates anything as partner with Allah has indeed strayed far away.

ISLAM, THE HOLY QUR’AN, 4:117

When Allah gathers the people on the Day of Judgement – a day in which there is no doubt in – a caller will call out: ‘Whoever committed shirk [associating partners with God] in any of his deeds he did for Allah – then let him seek his reward from other than Allah. For indeed Allah is the most free of the partners from any need of shirk.

ISLAM, THE HOLY PROPHET (SA), JAMI‘ AL-TIRMIDHI

Every person is an idolater in the sight of God who gives his own plans and actions the same importance as should be given to God, or relies upon a human being as he should rely on Him, or exalts his own self the way God should be exalted. In the sight of God, idols are not merely things made of gold, silver, bronze or stone in which people put their trust, rather every object and every word and deed that is given the same importance as should be given to Him is an idol.

ISLAM, THE PROMISED MESSIAH (AS), FOUR QUESTIONS BY A CHRISTIAN AND THEIR ANSWERS, P. 26

Who sees Me by form,
Who seeks Me in sound,
Perverted are his footsteps upon the Way;
For he cannot perceive the Tathagata.

BUDDHISM, DIAMOND SUTRA 26

Since you saw no form when the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire, take care and watch yourselves closely, so that you do not act corruptly by making an idol for yourselves, in the form of any figure – the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth.

JUDAISM, THE TORAH, DEUTERONOMY 4:15-18

Behold! A faithful wife has but one husband!
Behold! A true believer has but one God!
Look! The fellowship of other gods is debauchery!
Look! To believe in different gods is harlotry!

HINDUISM, BASAVANNA, VACANA 615-16
