World Faiths: Gratitude

And remember also the time when your Lord declared, ‘If you are grateful, I will, surely, bestow more favours on you; but if you are ungrateful, then know that My punishment is severe indeed.’

Islam, The Holy Qur’an, 14:8

Abu Hurairah (ra) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sa) said, ‘Look at those who are below you and do not look at those above you, for it is more suitable lest you look down on Allah’s blessings [bestowed upon] you.’

Islam, The Holy Prophet (sa), Hadith of Muslim

If you are honest, then be thankful and fall prostrate with gratitude that you have found the time which was awaited by your ancestors, and longing for which countless souls have passed on to the next life. It is for you now to value it and take advantage of it or to ignore it. I shall state it repeatedly and cannot restrain myself from announcing that I am the one who has been sent at the proper time for the reform of mankind so that faith might be reestablished in the hearts of people.

Islam, The Promised Messiah (as), The Essence of Islam, Volume 4, p.113

God created foods to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving; for then it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.

Christianity, The Bible, 1 Timothy 4:3-5

Be not like those who honour their gods in prosperity and curse them in adversity. In pleasure or pain, give thanks!

Judaism, Midrash, Mekilta to Exodus 20:20

The unworthy man is ungrateful, forgetful of benefits [done to him]. This ingratitude, this forgetfulness is congenial to mean people…But the worthy person is grateful and mindful of benefits done to him. This gratitude, this mindfulness, is congenial to the best people.

Buddhism, Anguttara Nikaya 1.61
