World Faiths: Leadership

Verily, Allah commands you to make over the trusts to those entitled to them, and that, when you judge between men, you judge with justice. And surely excellent is that with which Allah admonishes you! Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.

Islam, The Holy Qur’an, 4:59

Do not ask for the position of authority, for if you are granted this position as a result of your asking for it, you will be left to discharge it yourself; but if you are given it without asking you will be helped [by God].

Islam, The Holy Prophet (sa), Hadith of Sahih Muslim

I believe that the poisonous growth of envy and spite, which is secretly flourishing, will quickly disappear if our wise government passes a law that: [a] prohibits all parties, including the clerics of the Church, from indulging in negative attacks on other religions for a period of five years, [b] asks all parties to live together with love and civility, and [c] encourages all groups to focus on the positive features of their own religions. Such action on the part of the government will be appreciated, will have a beneficial impact on the people of the Frontier Region and will also promote peace and friendship.

Islam, the Promised Messiah (as), The British Government and Jihad, Part 4, p. 40

Rulers lost their senses in levity and frivolity; [Therefore] Babur’s command has gone abroad, That even princes now go about without a crust of bread.

Sikhism, Adi Granth, Asa Ashtapadi M.1, p. 417

Neither for the sake of oneself nor for the sake of another, not desiring son, wealth, or kingdom, should a person seek his own success by unjust means. Then only is a man indeed virtuous, wise and righteous.

Buddhism, Dhammapada, 84

Concerned alone with the upholding of the world, you should act. Whatever the best man does, others do that also. The world follows the standard that he sets for himself.

Hinduism, Bhagavad Gita, 3:20-21

When a man vows a vow to the Lord or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds from his mouth.

Judaism, Tanakh, Numbers, 30:2
